St. Peter’s-San Pedro Episcopal Church (SPSPEC) Networked Geothermal Project

June 2, 2026

The Clinic has officially published its new report,

St. Peter's-San Pedro Episcopal Church (SPSPEC) Networked Geothermal Project, prepared by the MIT Renewable Energy Clinic.

This report provides a stakeholder assessment and project overview for the proposed networked geothermal project centered around St. Peter's-San Pedro Episcopal Church in Salem, Massachusetts. Developed in partnership with local stakeholders, the report examines the project's evolution from a church-based energy retrofit to a broader community-scale geothermal energy network intended to improve energy affordability, climate resilience, and decarbonization efforts.

Through stakeholder interviews, community outreach, and policy research, the report identifies key interests, concerns, and opportunities related to project design, ownership, financing, governance, and community impacts. It also explores a range of ownership and financing models for geothermal energy networks and assesses how different approaches may align with local priorities and long-term project goals.

The report concludes with recommendations for continued stakeholder engagement, coordination with municipal processes, and future planning efforts to support informed decision-making as the project advances.
